Dentistry and Diabetes are Closely Related!
Did you know that proper dental care is important to your overall health?
Did you know that some health problems could put you at risk for oral diseases such as gingivitis?
Your dentist in Howell, Michigan wants to make sure you’re as informed as possible! Dental education and knowing the facts is probably important to you, and Dr. DiStefano strives to educate his patients and improve their lives through dental care and disease prevention.
According to the American Dental Association (ADA), “if you have diabetes, you are at greater risk of developing some oral health problems than people who do not have diabetes.” Because diabetes can lower your resistance to infection, you’re more prone to developing infections and oral diseases.
The ADA mentions two major potential issues when it comes to diabetes and how it affects oral health:
1) Periodontal Disease: Periodontal disease happens when the gums become infected and begin to pull away from the teeth, usually after plaque builds up on the gums. The ADA says, “it is not clear why, but periodontal diseases occur most often and can be more severe in people with diabetes. This seems to be especially true for those whose glucose levels are not well controlled.”
2) Fungal infections: Since people with diabetes can sometimes have compromised immune systems, they may be more prone to develop infections easier. “Oral candidiasis, or thrush, is a fungal infection that occurs in the mouth. Thrush seems to occur more frequently among people who smoke, wear dentures, or need to be treated often with antibiotics. High glucose levels also increase this risk.”
Regular communication with your physician and dentist is critical to your overall health. If you’re not sure if you’re taking all the steps to ensure you and your family’s health, make sure you speak with your dentist!
Visiting your family dentist in Howell, Michigan regularly can help you stay two steps ahead when it comes to oral health, especially if they know you have diabetes! Make sure you discuss your diabetes and how well it is controlled with your dental professional.
